At 112, Grace still loves her nightly whiskey
Grace Jones has made a lot of friends in 112 years, and many of them are here to sing her happy birthday. more
ITV News reporter Paul Davis asks what it feels like to be 112, a question nobody else in the country can answer. Grace keeps it simple. "I don't feel any different," she says. She feels 65, and old doesn't come into it: "No, no, no."
SaveAfter so many birthdays, he wonders if they still feel special. "Oh, yes," Grace says. "I love birthdays."
She was born in Liverpool in 1906 and has known 26 prime ministers. To her family and friends, she is Amazing Grace.
SaveThe secret, as Grace tells it, is a nightly tot. "My little drop of whiskey. I don't drink anything else. I don't drink in the day." Her bottle of choice is Famous Grouse, and the nightcap has been part of her evenings for more than 60 years.
The recipe has changed a little with age. Her doctor told her, "Grace, you're getting older. Put a little drop of water with it." So now she does, and the nightcap goes on.
SaveHer daughter Deirdre, who's 80, calls her mother extraordinary. Grace is still very particular about how she looks, and when the weather allows, her caretaker takes her into town each week to shop. Deirdre admits she takes after her mother when it comes to a whiskey at the end of the day.
Marrying her late husband, Leonard, was the highlight of her life, and they were married for 53 years. But Grace won't pick a favorite decade. "I loved them all," she says. "Every one."
SaveThe reporter says it looks like she is still loving them. "I hope so," she answers. "I'm not going anywhere." She hopes for more parties, and she has a second rule to help: stay positive and skip the stress.
"If you worry, it gets you down," Grace says. "I never, ever worry." Her friends would not be one bit surprised to gather again for the same song this time next year.
