The teen whose voice lags a second behind
Gracie has taught herself a new trick, and by her own count she is doing it way too often. more
"Look how freaking cool this is," she says, and then she shows you. Her mouth makes the shape of "hi." A second later, with her lips not moving, the "hi" arrives, like a voice on a bad phone line.
SaveHer own description is simple: "You just delay your words after you mouth them." Then she pictures it from the other side. You walk up to meet someone, they say hi a second too late, and you are left wondering who just did that. "That's art," she decides.
So many people asked about the lagging voice thing that she comes back to explain it. The secret, she says, is to find words that don't make your lips touch, like "hi" and "hey." She's honest about the limits, too. She's not that good at ventriloquism, she admits, and she can't do songs.
She also promises it is not a voiceover. There is no one else in the room, she points out, and you can see her throat move. She lets a few heys trail out late. "I don't know how else to prove it to you guys," she says, and then comes the sign-off. "Super fun. So yeah, that's about it."
Plenty of people are charmed by her. They love how excited she is, and that she hands over the trick instead of showing off, like a magician explaining her own act. Others can't resist the lag jokes, from bad wifi to the whole world's server.
And then there's the person who tried it. The most-liked reaction of all comes from someone who gave it a go alone in an apartment and is very glad nobody was there to watch.
