Young flycatcher won't quit the waterfall bath

A retired architect in Japan built a birdbath with its own little waterfall, set a wildlife camera beside it and left the rest to the birds. more

What he made is a clear-sided bath with a bowl of birdseed next to it. A solar pump keeps water pouring in, so the bath works like a shower that never runs out.

On this day the nuthatches get there first, and they're in no mood to share. They spread their tails and wings at each other and dive in to attack, while a willow tit hurries in between them. A Japanese tit and a female narcissus flycatcher turn up in the middle of it all.

Then a young male blue-and-white flycatcher arrives. He's a small bird of Japan's woods, brown on the chest with blue on his wings, and he lands on the wooden deck by the bath.

The young male arrives on the deck a moment before he hops into the water.

He doesn't test the water. He hops straight in and sits there like someone soaking in a tub, and because the sides are clear, you can see his feet under the surface.

A nuthatch soon chases him out, then goes after another small visitor. The young flycatcher comes back anyway and bathes again, harder this time, until everything around the bath is soaked.

The nuthatches keep up their fight all day. The architect built this bath for the birds, and the birds have clearly decided it is theirs.
