Her blue jay friend likes a little space

A light snow is falling, and a blue jay named Jay sits in a tree near Choo's balcony, chirping back each time Choo calls to her. more

Choo lives in the forest. Her balcony looks out on trees on one side and blue water on the other, and its railings are lined with bright flowers. With the neighborhood chipmunks tucked away for the winter, Jay has become the regular around the house.

Jay keeps an eye on things from the roof near Choo's home.

Jay has learned to talk to Choo, but talk alone will not bring her down. One fan says her call sounds like a bicycle horn. She stays up in the branches until there is something on the table worth landing for.

Once the food is out, she drops down and hops across the table. One sharp-eyed fan says she bounces along like she is in moon gravity, as if her feathers keep lifting her even with her wings shut.

Once there's something to eat, Jay drops onto the balcony among the flowers.

Up close she is all color, bright blue feathers with black and white stripes at the edges. She grabs some food and flies off with it. Choo thinks Jay has a secret hiding place, and the bird is most likely storing up for winter.

Most of the time, Choo can look out the window and find Jay already waiting for her to come outside. The bird calls from a tree, then sits and waits for the food to come out.

Most days Jay is already outside, waiting for Choo to come out.

Choo has learned one more thing about her guest. Jay is happier when Choo takes a few steps back. One admirer is sure this jay has her human well trained.

Plenty of people compare Choo to Snow White, out in the woods with her animal friends. There is even a birdbath nearby for when Jay gets thirsty, and Choo never tires of watching her fly.
