The squirrel who slapped away the coconut
The window ledge at this house works like a drive-thru, and the regulars are squirrels with opinions. Something new is on the menu. more
It started with one almond. A woman tossed it to a curious squirrel, and the next day the squirrel came back. Now about 30 different animals stop at her window, from squirrels and chipmunks to raccoons and birds, and their visits fill the Squirrels at the Window channel. Regulars like Ellie and Cutie know where to wait.
The menu is mostly nuts and fruit. Grapes and blueberries sit on the sill, and a squirrel leans in to sniff them over.
SaveThen she offers something new, some coconut. The first squirrel slaps it right out of her hand, like a diner regular who has ordered the same thing every day and isn't about to change now. The tail flicking says the rest.
SaveThe coconut gets a second chance in a bowl. The next squirrel to come up looks right at her and points, as if checking that the bowl is really meant for this customer. Then come small first nibbles, a quick pull back and a careful pause before going back in for more.
SaveSquirrels come and go. One stands upright, bushy tail held high. People who follow them call these the healthiest squirrels they have ever seen, and it's hard to argue.
SaveThe squirrels aren't the only customers. A cardinal slips between the bushes, and other birds drop in to get their share. By the end, the coconut has found some fans, which is more than it managed on the first try.
