A Shar-Pei, a week-old foal and a game of tag
At a year old, Chino the Shar-Pei is fairly used to life in the English countryside. Then he crosses paths with Duke, a foal just one week old. more
They meet in a pasture full of white and yellow flowers. When Chino first sees the foal, he skitters out of his path. But as Duke comes closer, the dog sits right down to watch, looking up at the foal's face as if sizing him up.
SaveDuke lowers his head and takes a few careful steps forward. Then he backs away, loops around and comes back for another look. He's dark, with white markings on his face, and easy to spot against the green.
SaveChino, the whole time, sits still as a statue. But when Duke comes close a second time, the dog leaps up and gives chase.
After that the two of them romp around the pasture like old friends. Duke's mother stays calm through all of it and lets the fuzzy dog play with her baby.
SaveChino isn't the Shar-Pei most people picture, either. His coat is fluffy, a rare look that people who know the breed call a bear coat.
In the end Duke runs back to his mother. Chino isn't done playing. He follows his new friend and sits down right behind him in the grass, ready for the next game of tag.
