Six days to win over a stray named Shine
In Romania, Juliana Carpino, who lives in Canada, found a black stray dog living in an open field. Something was tied around his neck, and she knew right away that he needed help. more
She called to him and held out food. He wouldn't come near it. Then she spotted a second dog lying beside some parked cars at a busy intersection, and this one walked up to her happy and friendly.
He had a scar near his nose and had been abused, so Juliana named him Scar. Soon she was walking him to her car. The black dog, Shine, kept his distance, and before she left she promised him she would come back.
She kept that promise. For five days she tried to coax him out of the field, but he was too afraid. On the sixth day, Shine came out and followed her. Juliana could see that he was begging her not to leave him there.
SaveThe two dogs seemed to know each other, though they weren't close. Three days later, Juliana took them both home to Canada, a trip of 23 hours. It was their first time in a car, and they acted as if they knew where they were going.
At the house, both dogs looked around as if to ask what this place was. Shine walked straight in. Scar wanted to stay outside, and the family had to convince him it was okay. Even then, he seemed confused for the rest of the day.
SaveAfter all they had been through together, Juliana decided to adopt them both. Their personalities showed fast. Scar is more of a regular dog and wants to be outside most of the time. Shine, as she puts it, is "like a human in a dog," happiest on the bed or the couch.
The two act like brothers and can't stand to be apart. Juliana's daughter connected with them right away, and soon it was like having three kids. The dog who wouldn't come near her food in that field now sprawls on the couch, as cuddly as he can be.
