Stray puppy's first bath after weeks in the snow

For weeks, people nearby had heard a puppy crying out in the cold. When the rescuers got the call, they had to search the snow for her tracks. more

The team helps stray dogs and cats in the Balkans, and this search took a while. Then there she was, all alone. She was a stray, around 2 months old, living outside at minus 17 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 Fahrenheit. Her chances of lasting the winter on her own were low.

She was also very afraid of them. So they didn't rush her. They stayed near her for a while, and in the end she came to them. She was so cold.

The rescuers stayed near the frightened puppy until she came to them on her own.

In the car, the heat went up to the max, and she got food right away. They had forgotten the puppy bowl, so a towel on the seat did the job. She was starving and had probably not eaten in days. She was still hungry when the food ran out, but that was all they had.

She fell asleep in the car almost at once. As she warmed up, the snow on her melted, and under her fur she was covered in mud and dirt. Nobody knew her breed, or even her name.

The first job at her new home was a bath, the first of her life. She was curious, but it turned out she was afraid of the water. The rescuers went gently, working out the dirt and as many fleas as they could. It took three washes, and she held up fine.

Then came the towel, and she wanted out of it. Once she was dry, she sniffed everything, peed on the floor, of course, and then met another puppy in the house. The two got along at once.

Then came a good meal, and after it, a round of hide-and-seek. For the rest of the day she had one rule. No more water. Her rescuers figure she had had enough of it in the bath.

The last stop was the vet. She weighed 3.5 kilograms, about 7 pounds, and got a pill for parasites and medicine to take home. She peed at the vet too, as if nothing had happened. Afterward, she fell asleep in the car again.
