98-year-old mom moves in to look after her son

Tom Keaton is 80, and his mother still says goodnight to him in his room every night. Ada is 98. She moved into his care home to look after him. more

Tom got there first. He needed special care, so he moved into Moss View, a care home in Liverpool, England. Ada was doing fine on her own at home and had no need to leave. A year later she followed him anyway, so she could keep an eye on her son and make sure he had all the help he needed.

Ada, 98, left her own home to join her son Tom at his care home in Liverpool.

He's the first of her four children, and the two have always been close. Ask whether she looks after him and whether they spend all day together, and the answer comes right back. "Oh yes." Tom says she is very good at looking after him. Now and then she still tells him to behave himself.

Ada lays out their day in her own words. She likes him to have a sleep, and she has one too. She goes down for dinner, and when she comes back, "we sit in those two chairs." Then it's back up to the telly.

After a nap and dinner, she and Tom sit together in their two chairs.

The staff at Moss View can't get over them. They watch the pair play games, and the two never miss Emmerdale, the long-running British soap. Phillip Daniels, who runs the home, says it is very rare to see a mother and her child living in the same care home. He calls them inseparable.

Their days have small routines. In the morning Ada stops by his room to say good morning and tell him she is going down to breakfast. When she goes out to the hairdresser, he watches for her to come back. When she does, he comes to her with his arms out for a big hug.
