A 92-year-old widow and the puppy who found her
Sally is 92 and lives alone. When the neighbors' St. Bernard puppy went missing, the search for him ended at her place. more
Sally Rewehooeern lives in Mount Vernon, Washington, a town in the foothills of the Cascades. She grew up somewhere much flatter, in Leeuwarden, up in the north of the Netherlands, and came to the United States as a young woman. Her husband died 27 years ago. She has children, but they live in other parts of the country.
Her neighbors' old dog had died. When they were ready, they adopted a St. Bernard puppy named Brody, and one day he wandered off. His people searched in a panic. They found him hanging out with Sally.
It made a kind of sense. Back in the Netherlands, Sally grew up on a farm surrounded by St. Bernards, so she knew exactly what she was looking at. Brody, for his part, seems to have known a friend when he saw one.
SaveNow Brody is a regular at her place. The two spend time together indoors, at her door and out on the pavement. He's 15 weeks old, already a large dog, and nowhere near done growing. His owners don't seem to mind how often he gets borrowed, and Sally and the puppy both look pleased with the arrangement.
St. Bernards made their name in the Alps, finding people in trouble. They never did carry little barrels of brandy on their collars, whatever the old pictures say; an animal painter seems to have dreamed that up. Brody has already made his first find.
