Daniel rides to homecoming in a Rolls-Royce

Daniel Rivas is 17 and has Down syndrome. He wanted to go to homecoming and got turned down, so Kylie Fronius asked him herself. more

Kylie, a Shadow Ridge student, made her ask at school, and it went from social media to the local news. She doesn't see kids with a disability as different, she said. "I think of them just being a normal person learning in a different way." Daniel's mom could hardly find the words. "Someone took the time to take my son to homecoming," she said.

Kylie's invitation is where the whole night of surprises began.

That's when the FOX5 Surprise Squad stepped in. On the night of the dance, Monica Jackson shows up at Kylie's house, where Daniel waits in a white shirt, suspenders and a boutonniere. "You look so handsome," Jackson tells him, and Kylie says she just hopes she can make his night fun. Daniel's mom is next. "I'm just touched," she says. "My heart is happy."

The first surprise is the ride. "We want you guys to arrive in style," Jackson says, and a Rolls-Royce is waiting to take them to homecoming. Asked what he thinks, Daniel talks about his mom. "Mama so happy." His mom says Kylie "didn't see any disabilities," and that is what moved her as a mom.

The car stops first at a bistro inside Aliante Casino, where a chef named Frank hears that Daniel likes spaghetti and meatballs, like Mama makes at home. His mom eats with them. She says she walks past this place a lot and thinks she could never afford to eat there, let alone bring her kids. Daniel wants to go to college and be a chef, she says, "and you know what, I'm going to try as much as I can to provide that for him."

At the dance, a red carpet is rolled out for the two of them, and classmates and teachers cheer as they walk it. Then Jackson takes the stage. "That was a lot of surprises, right?" she says. "We're not done." Both families are going to Disneyland.

Don Forman, the owner of United Nissan, takes the mic next. "Daniel, you're a great young man," he says. "We're very proud of you." After high school, a $10,000 scholarship will be waiting for him.

Kylie's gift is outside. Forman takes her hand and leads everyone out a side door to a shiny new car. "My mind is blown," she says, and someone notices that she is shaking. All it took, Forman says, was one news story and "a young lady with a huge heart."

His mom is already thinking about college. It's Daniel's big thing, she says, and a lot of people have put limits on him. "He's capable of doing anything and everything that he wants."

There's one more gift for Daniel, who loves superheroes. It's a load of Avengers gear, plus 10 tickets to the Marvel Avengers Station at TI. "Awesome," he says. Before the night is over, Kylie asks him a simple question. "You happy, buddy?" "Yeah."
