The teen who asked his mom to sing with him

A few days before his Britain's Got Talent audition, Jamie said he couldn't do it. Then he asked his mom to come and sing something with him. more

She said yes. Melanie, 44, and Jamie, 15, are mother and son from Wales. She is a professional singer. He's the one who got them here.

What they haven't done is sing together for long. Asked how long they have been at it, they answer a couple of weeks, and only in their living room at home. They call themselves a very happy, lucky family who do a lot together.

Jamie is excited to sing on stage with his mom for the first time, and says he feels a lot more confident with her there. Melanie says walking out with her son "is going to be one of the proudest moments of my life."

They sing “Say Something,” the A Great Big World song, and Jamie takes the lead. Melanie sings the harmony and is never louder than he is.

In the song's final moments, Jamie looks ahead with a small smile. Whatever doubts he had a few days ago, he has sung it all the way through.

One judge tells Jamie he should be very proud of himself and says he sings with so much passion. Another had expected Mel, the professional, to completely dominate the song. Instead she let Jamie take the lead and allowed it to be his song, and her harmonies made it better. Fans agree in the comments, praising a mom with a powerful voice who did not hog the song.

There's praise, too, for giving a child space to breathe. Melanie, a judge notes, didn't take her eyes off him. Amanda Holden calls it "absolutely beautiful."

All four judges say yes, and mother and son finish with a huge hug. Not many 15-year-olds would want to enter a talent show with their mom, a fan observes. This one asked.
