A blind white squirrel finds a kind roommate

Polar is a white squirrel, and she's blind. At home, Alwyn Wils offers her bits of fruit by hand and keeps a close eye on what she needs. more

Alwyn cares for a lot of animals and films them for his channel, A Chick Called Albert. Even so, this one small squirrel gets a great deal of his time.

She doesn't let the blindness slow her much. Polar finds her way around obstacles with her other senses, inside her cage and out, and she runs and climbs like any squirrel. It's hard to tell she can't see.

Alwyn builds an aviary just for her. And because Polar cannot always find her bed, she has several.

The bigger step is joining the other squirrels. It's easy to worry they will not be kind to a newcomer who cannot see them coming. Instead, an orange squirrel comes over, and the two end up nose to nose by the fence.

Soon after Polar joins the other squirrels, an orange one comes close enough to touch noses.

Nights are the hard part at first, and Polar sits alone in the cold. She explores the way she does everything, nose first. Up on top of a wooden box, she sniffs her way along the edge of its round hole, and before long she has found herself a den.

Polar explores her new home by smell, sniffing at the edge of a box with a round hole.

She doesn't keep it to herself for long. One of the other squirrels moves in to share it at night, and later the two of them come out of the den together.

At Christmas, Alwyn makes the squirrels presents and brings in a tree with their favorite treats wrapped around it. Polar, for one, makes it a white Christmas.
