Hugs first, carrots later for this donkey

Two visitors with carrots call out across the pasture. Far off, a donkey hears them, lets out a bray and starts to run. more

"Oh, did you miss us?" one of them calls. "Come on, sweetheart." He trots all the way across the pasture, and his honking bray gets there first.

"Hi, fella. Oh, look at you. Oh, it's been a long time," they greet him. Someone holds out a carrot and teases him a little. "You're out here just for the carrots, are you?" The answer, they decide right there, is no.

"Look at his eyes," one of them says. "He's not asking for a carrot." He stands at the fence while a hand scratches behind his ear. He just wants to get a little hug, someone explains.

At the fence, he takes a scratch behind the ear over the carrot on offer.

So he gets one, with what they call hugs and squeezes. Only then does anyone ask, "You want a carrot now?" Everyone laughs, and he's told he can have all the carrots he wants.

"He remembers us," one of them says. "Yes, he does." He stands there soaking it all up and working through his carrots. He is, by their verdict, "a chewer."

Then a horse comes over, and the visitors are a little starstruck. "That is one good-looking horse," one of them says. While they admire him, the donkey walks away, and for a moment it looks like he has had enough.

He hasn't. "Oh, he's looking for us," someone says, and they go to him with a carrot broken in half. "You thought I left you, huh?" After that it's all about his face, and one of them keeps saying it: "Look at that snout."
