Boogie-woogie for two at a train station piano

An older man sits at a piano in a train station, playing for himself. A few people passing by slow down to listen. more

Then Brendan Kavanagh walks up and starts to play along. Brendan, known as Dr. K, is a British piano teacher of Irish descent, and boogie-woogie is what he loves to play and teach.

At first he plays standing up, right beside the seated man, laying a boogie-woogie beat over the tune. Then he sits down on the man's left and adds a bass line.

That's when it gets going. With Brendan holding down the low end, the man has the upper keys to himself. Boogie-woogie is built on making it up as you go, and the two of them trade riffs and melodies for more than five minutes.

Between songs, Brendan asks if he knows certain tunes, and off they go again. More and more people stop. Phones come out to film it.

Brendan has done this many times, at train stations and shopping malls, sitting down with whoever happens to be playing. His nickname comes from his PhD in English.

Viewers have a lot of fun with this one. A favorite joke is that the older man is Brendan himself, visiting from the future. A viewer who is 75 and never had money for lessons as a kid wishes they could play like this. Another says that if this were an airport, they would miss their flight.
