Two polar bear sisters and one tub of ice
There's one tub of ice at the Oregon Zoo and two polar bears who want it. Sisters Nora and Amelia Gray, born a year apart, work it out the way siblings do. more
The tub sits in their yard among grassy slopes and trees, packed with ice and cold water. Both bears put their faces in it to drink.
SaveThe trouble is size. The tub can't hold two polar bears, so the sisters take turns, one in the ice and one on the grass.
Waiting isn't their strong suit. The sister on the outside tries to gnaw her way in while the other one is still playing. It looks harmless, the kind of play fighting that comes with having a sister.
SaveWhen a bear gets her turn, she goes in nose first. She rolls onto her back, rolls the other way, and pushes her head down into the pile as if she wants to sink even lower. Anyone who has flopped into a pool on a hot day knows that move.
SaveNow and then one bear lounges in the icy water while her sister stands close by on the grass. At times it even seems as if the one outside is helping, pushing ice on top of the one inside.
SaveOne fan likes that there's no music over the top, so you can hear the ice crunch and the play-fighting sounds of two big bears. Plenty of others have the same note for the zoo. They're going to need a bigger tub.
