Nobody knows how the kitten got out there, or how long the log had been home. What's known is who went in. Brendon Moore is a field supervisor with Seguin Animal Services, a city job that does not, as a rule, involve swimming.

He went in wearing his full uniform and swam out to the log, which sat in the river near the boat ramp. Then he turned around and swam back to the river's edge, holding the soaked kitten up out of the water the whole way.

Below an I-10 bridge in Seguin, a small black kitten was stuck on a log in the Guadalupe River, and the water was the only way off.

On the bank there was a white blanket to dry off in, and after that a trip to Seguin Animal Services for a full checkup. The shelter kept an eye out for an owner. If none turned up, the kitten would need a home, and the staff promised to let people know if the little cat came up for adoption.

Seguin Animal Services posted the pictures on its Facebook page, from Moore stepping into the water in his uniform to Moore swimming back with the kitten held clear of the river. That is how a city worker ended up on the local news being called a hero.

He doesn't especially look like one in the pictures. He looks like a man in a soaked uniform at the edge of a river with a kitten in his hands. One comment under the story is two words long: true hero. Another says it is nice to see something positive for a change, which might be the better compliment.
