German shepherd Anna gets a ride off the street
Anna is roaming a Houston street, nosing through garbage cans for something to eat. Car after car goes by without slowing down. more
The people who finally pull over are from World Animal Awareness Society and Unity For A Solution, two groups out keeping track of stray dogs around Houston. Kurt Geurdrum makes the approach, with Angela Madeksho helping. Before long a pink leash is on, and Anna is letting a rescuer pet her near a tree.
SaveShe takes it calmly. A dog who has been living on the street could easily snap when a stranger reaches toward her neck with a leash. Anna doesn't.
With the leash on, Anna gets curious. She puts her nose down in the grass beside the pavement and sniffs while a rescuer holds the other end.
SaveSomeone on the team explains what comes next, and it's good news for her. "German Shepherds are really popular," the rescuer says. "They're a wonderful breed." Anna can go to a family nearby or travel up north to one, and nobody expects any trouble finding her a home.
Then it's time to go, and the car ride is the part many people remember. Anna looks happy once she's settled inside, and a dog who had been eating out of the trash now has a seat of her own.
SaveOn the street she was a dog the traffic didn't see. In the car she is what the rescuer calls a "highly adoptable dog."
