Grandpa's Welsh terrier finds her sea legs
Kale's grandpa had a Welsh terrier puppy named Maggie. Kale adopted her, and now wherever Kale goes, Maggie goes, even 600 miles out to sea. more
It didn't come easy at first. Kale started her out on little boats, and as a puppy Maggie was a slow learner. He moved her up to the big boats, and somewhere along the way the slow learner turned into a pro.
SaveKale fishes for tuna, and one trip lasts anywhere from two weeks to a month. Maggie, his best companion, goes along every time, far offshore and in rough weather too. She hops aboard and enjoys the bumpy ride.
Rough water doesn't throw her. Maggie has learned to keep her balance on a rolling deck, leaning almost sideways and swaying back and forth to ride out each roll. She also has a new haircut and a life vest of her own. Once her mind is set on a boat ride, she will not budge.
SaveDays start early on a tuna boat. The crew is up at 3 am, so Maggie is up at 3 am. Everyone wakes up tired and sore, then says good morning to Maggie. She eats breakfast with the team and spends the day doing whatever the rest of them do, always close to somebody.
Then a sea lion pops up out of the waves. Maggie jumps up and her tail starts wagging. She can't take her eyes off him, as if she's trying to work out whether this is some new kind of dog.
SaveThe crew loves her. She watches everyone work, as if making sure the job gets done, and she makes friends left and right. Having her aboard is a big morale booster. She came to Kale as his grandpa's puppy, and at sea, one ear up and one ear folded down, she is everybody's.
