Jealous Archie takes Edith to her class reunion
Edith is going to her high school reunion, and Archie has agreed to come along. Then he finds out that her old boyfriend is there too. more
A reunion is an occasion, and Edith dresses for it in a teal flowered dress. Archie wears a dark suit and the solemn face of a man doing his duty. Ahead of them is a room full of people Edith went to high school with.
Archie's job is to escort his wife, and he manages that part. What he didn't count on is learning that Edith's old boyfriend from high school is at the party too. From then on Carroll O'Connor plays jealousy the Archie way, with no grace at all. Jean Stapleton's Edith, meanwhile, is all smiles and takes the whole night in stride.
SaveThe party has its own cast of characters, and the one people remember turns up near the end. A woman says 'nuff said' and pulls down her eyelid. Nobody seems sure what she meant, and people are still asking.
Fans remember this as the show their families watched together every week, and the reunion is a fair sample. Archie's jealousy is played for laughs. Edith's happiness is played straight. The two of them in one room is the whole show in miniature.
SaveWhatever Archie thinks of the party, he's there, in his suit, at Edith's side while she has her night. From Archie, that's about as close to a love letter as anyone gets.
