Otters love the popcorn maker until it pops

The popcorn maker is small and red, and to two young otters it is the most interesting thing in the room. For a while, anyway. more

They spend a long time on it. They peer inside, sniff it, and try to climb on top and crawl in, their small hands on everything. Then their human brings out the bag of kernels, and the machine is forgotten. The bag is better.

He pours the kernels in and turns the machine on, and that's the end of the fun. The noise is bad enough. When the first kernels start to pop, the otters are gone.

They tear around the room and up the stairs. Now and then they hide side by side under a nearby couch, where nothing can pop at them.

But they keep coming back. The corn they wanted so badly a minute ago is now a problem, and they can't leave it alone either. They are nosy and scared at once, and they never quite pick one. At one point, one of them catches a piece of popcorn like a tiny goalie and shows no interest in eating it.

Between escapes, one otter leans in close to something on the floor.

Once the popping stops, the popcorn goes on the table. One otter stands up on two legs at the edge, head tipped back, for a look.

Later, one of them sits on a dark rug with a stack of bowls all around and gazes up. The otters look at a few pieces of popcorn. They don't seem tempted.
