Seven lynx kittens take over an Alaska porch
The noises that woke Tim Newton at his Alaska home were coming from the porch. When he went to look, a mother lynx and seven kittens had claimed it. more
At first glance it looked as if a crowd of house cats had moved in. A second look told Tim what he really had. These were lynx kittens, and their mother was right there with them, playing along.
Tim is a professional photographer, so he did what came naturally and picked up his camera. The click of the shutter didn't send anyone running. If anything, the family drifted closer and ended up in a row right outside his screen door.
Then the kittens got busy. They raced back and forth across the deck, plainly not worried about the man watching them. At one point a lynx lay flat out on the snowy ground. Wild lynx are hard to spot at all, and here were eight of them using his porch as a playground.
SaveThe paws steal the show. They look far too big for the kittens wearing them, like boots borrowed from an older brother. One viewer, whose family calls cat paws muffins, said these were the biggest muffins ever. Another, with five cats at home, could only imagine the thunder of feet that size on a wooden floor.
Mama lynx and her kittens stayed for about 40 minutes. For a man who photographs wildlife, it was the kind of visit most people never get, and it came right to his door. As one viewer put it, nobody needs a TV with a window like that.
