The fox who never shares gives her egg to a pup

Phoenix has never set a paw in the fox yard. He's one of the pups rescued from a fur farm, and Mikayla Raines of SaveAFox Rescue takes him down to meet the grown foxes. more

On the way down, Mikayla warns that Finnegan, the red fox, is not as interested in pups as he used to be. He's like a grandpa now, maybe a great-grandpa. The younger foxes, Floofala, Serafina and Matthias, are the ones who really like the babies. Finnegan does seem happy to see Mikayla, at least.

Phoenix hits the grass and goes, with no warm-up at all. The grown foxes come over one at a time to see what has arrived. Serafina takes charge, and before long she is giving him a bath.

Then comes the egg. Matthias wants it. Serafina has other ideas, and she keeps trying to give it to the baby.

Finnegan watches from across the yard, a fox who has done his time with pups. He has found a toy instead. "You just want to be the baby," Mikayla tells him. He's missing out on the cute stuff, she adds, and Finnegan keeps his distance.

Back on the grass, Serafina gets her way. She would never share food with any other fox, Mikayla says, but she'll with a baby. In the end she and Phoenix split it.

Vixie comes by to see the baby, and Floofala comes out too. Phoenix keeps finding places to tuck himself away. "Come here, got you," Mikayla says, and tells him he would play that game forever. She has chores to do, she says, though staying out there for hours wouldn't be so bad.

Phoenix won't stay. He is headed to a fox rescue in Florida, and the other pups will either settle in at SaveAFox or move on to fox sanctuaries around the country. For now he has Serafina, who gave up her egg for him, and a long look from Finnegan across the lawn. That's about as close as Finnegan seems to want to get.
