Toronto Zoo's baby giraffe is finding his legs

At the Toronto Zoo, a young giraffe known as Baby Long Legs is working out what those legs can do. more

He's still new at this. His mother, Mstari, is with him in the indoor giraffe habitat, and he's getting stronger every day. For now he does a lot of looking. A face appears over the low wall, one ear out, and takes in whoever is on the other side.

Baby Long Legs lifts his head over the low wall to see who is watching.

Then he gets moving. He goes around the whole place, poking into every last corner of his new home. Somewhere in the middle of it the excitement gets to be too much, and he breaks into a run, bouncing in circles with his legs going in four directions at once.

Every so often he goes back to Mstari. She stands where she's and looks on. There is nothing here to be afraid of, and he'll work that out soon enough. For now he just likes knowing where she is.

By the end he has slowed down. He stands square in front of the painted hills, beside the tree and the big rock, legs set under him and tail flicking, like a giraffe who has just worked out what all that length is for.

Near the end he stands still by the tree and the rock, legs set under him, in front of the painted hills.

The savanna behind him is paint, and the hills are a wall. He doesn't seem to mind. For a calf still learning where his feet are, it's more than enough world for now, and his mother is right there in it.
