Grumpy Great Dane gives one puppy a lift
When his owner started fostering dogs, Bu the Great Dane acted very much like a grumpy old man. The puppies wanted a friend. Bu wasn't a fan at all. more
The first round came from a litter of 15 puppies, and she took two of them home. They danced around the big dog and tried to get him to play. Bu gave them a look that said, what's this.
He just wasn't having it. Next came three beagle puppies, and she says you could basically see him rolling his eyes. He would look up at her with a sour face that said the rest.
SaveHis owner, on the other hand, was hooked from day one. She liked fostering so much that she decided she needed a dog of her own. The one she wanted was Dizzy, a puppy staying with foster parents on the Lower East Side.
She drove into the city with Bu so the two could meet. She was looking for some sort of sign that this was the right dog, for her, for Bu and for the family. She asked the foster parents if she could take Dizzy for a couple of hours, just for a drive.
On the Williamsburg Bridge, she saw Dizzy snuggling into him, then glanced into the back seat. Dizzy had climbed on top of Bu's back to stick her head out the window, using him as a step stool. Bu was letting her, which he would never do. In her words, "That's what made the decision for us to adopt her."
SaveOver the months the two grew closer and closer. Soon they were playing all the time. Every morning they spent about 45 minutes in bed, just playing with each other.
The two became absolute partners. To her, they're Timon and Pumbaa. Many viewers figure Bu never needed a crowd of puppies, just one of his own. "I never thought it would be this level of good," she says.
