Mama dog Milo nurses three kittens

Milo's puppies came at least a week early, and none of them survived. Back home, she went looking for them anyway. more

Her rescuer wanted to give her something to mother, and put a post on social media asking for puppies who might not have a mom. A lot of people had kittens. Nobody had puppies. Well, the rescuer thought, it could work.

The rescuer picked up three new little friends and took it slowly. Milo showed no sign of being aggressive, so one kitten came out first to be sniffed. "Good girl," the rescuer tells her. When that felt right, a second kitten came out, and then the third, and Milo shifted over on her bed to make room.

The kittens latched on, which the rescuer found really exciting. They still got bottles so they had enough to eat, but they had the comfort of nursing on Milo. Her pull to mother something was so strong that the rescuer is not sure Milo knew they were any different from her own babies. Her new brood said mew instead of whimper, and she didn't seem to mind.

A routine took shape. The rescuer took the kittens away to feed them, then brought them back, and the minute they got back, Milo was thrilled to see them. She had to be extra gentle, because they were so tiny. They would come out, nurse and get a good cleaning.

Milo also had a favorite, which the rescuer found funny. The other two kittens could wander off and explore. But if Gumball climbed out of the play pool, Milo went and got her and brought her back. She needed Gumball near her.

As the kittens began to wean, Milo cleaned them for shorter stretches. Then it was time for homes. A man named David adopted Milo, and David lives with his sister, who had always wanted one of the kittens. She got Gumball, Milo's favorite, so the two were together again.

They're doing well and getting along great. The other two kittens found homes of their own. Three kittens who would never have had a mom got one, and the rescuer says it was good for Milo, too.
