Haus steps between Molly and a snake

An Eastern diamondback rattlesnake was hiding in the grass behind the house. Molly was playing out there with her best friend, a German shepherd named Haus. more

Haus is never far from her. He sticks by her on rainy days and on rides to school, and that day was no different. He came between Molly and the snake, and he stayed there.

"He just got struck again and again," her mom says, "but like I said, he just stayed." The snake hit him three times in the left front leg. Molly was safe.

Afterward, Haus collapsed in the house. At the animal hospital he got the antivenom he needed, several costly doses of it, along with care around the clock. The whole thing took a lot out of him, and he had to stay for a while.

Molly and her mom come to see him there, and the visit seems to do him good. "Seems happier, Molly, just 'cause he sees you."

Bills like that pile up fast. The family, who had taken Haus in as a rescue dog, set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his care and, more important, to bring him home.

People came through. The family raised enough to cover his medical bills and gave the money left over to animal charities. "I just feel like sometimes there's no greater love than a dog," her mom says.
