Shelter dogs pick their own Christmas toys

At Dogs Trust Ireland, the Christmas shopping is left to the dogs. Nobody picks a present for them. They choose their own. more

The day has a name, Santa Paws Day, and a room to match. Stuffed toys cover the floor of the play area, and pictures of small dogs line the walls. A white dog with brown patches stands among them.

No two dogs shop the same way. A husky works along the toys nose first, sniffing one and then the next. Others are less patient, and a few grab more than one before they make up their minds.

A greyhound, all legs, picks the longest toy in the pile, which seems only fair. Once a choice is made, nobody hangs about. A brown dog in a red harness takes a red toy and is off across the room at a run.

Once a dog has picked a toy, there's no hanging about.

Dogs Trust Ireland held the day for the dogs spending Christmas at the shelter. Among the other picks are an octopus and a squeaky cabbage. Whatever the toy, the tail behind it is wagging.
