The corgi who mothers every baby on the farm

On a 40-acre rescue farm, any baby left without a mother soon finds a short, low-slung substitute. Her name is Hannah, and she's a two-year-old Welsh Corgi. more

Hannah does not play favorites. Rabbit, chicken, goat or cow, if it's a baby and it is alone, it is hers. One person who watched her says she claimed a batch of chicks as her own only seconds after meeting them.

Newborn chicks get her full attention. She plays with them and guards them closely. A baby rabbit gets the same care, along with a share of the leather couch.

The baby rabbit gets a spot on the leather couch right next to its foster mom.

Lucy the calf is the biggest of her babies. Lucy's mother rejected her when she was just two days old, and Hannah made sure the calf was never left alone. Lucy has grown up since then, and Hannah is still right beside her.

Bath time is where it gets funny. Hannah licks a cow, the cow licks her right back, and neither one seems sure who is supposed to be cleaning whom.

The soft side stops at other dogs. If one comes too close to her babies, Hannah growls and snarls. The dogs she is warning are much bigger than she is, and they just stand there, smiling a little awkwardly.

Then there are the piglets, two to five days old. She mothers them too, and with the newborns, mothering includes a fair amount of play.

Off guard duty, there's time for a roll in the grass.

Her newest baby is a little goat, and she treats him as one of her own. When she starts to growl, someone nearby says, "Okay, love the baby," and Hannah stops and licks the goat instead. Being small and alone never lasts long on this farm.
