At 73, grandma flexes for the judges
Josefina Monasterio grew up in Venezuela, raised by a grandmother who always said she was a natural entertainer. It takes a while, but she gets her stage. more
She was born in a little town and dreamed of being someplace else. She moved to America, went after her education and became a teacher. She settled down, had two daughters and says she was very happy.
Still, one thing never left her. "I always like to be in front of people," she says. Now, in a later chapter, she's chasing that dream, and she calls tonight the biggest moment in her life. "I want to show the world what I can do."
She walks out in a form-fitting bikini and gives the judges her name. She lives in the United States. Then comes her age.
She plays with it a little. A guess of 25 floats by before she sets it straight. "No, no, I am 73 years." The crowd can hardly believe it.
SaveThe next answer is just as good. Asked how long she's been working out, she says, "I started bodybuilding at 59 years old." That's enough for the judges. "I'm not going to ask anything else," one of them says, and tells her to just do her thing.
So she does. She flexes and poses, showing off the muscle she's built since she was 59.
Many of the comments come in Spanish, and they're full of praise. One fellow Venezuelan calls her seventy-three years young. Her grandmother saw it coming.
