Two a cappella groups sing "A Song for Mama"
"Mama, you know I love you." The men of Straight No Chaser sing it with two guests from Home Free, Tim Foust and Austin Brown, and every voice comes with a mom. more
The song is "A Song for Mama," the ballad Boyz II Men first made famous. It spent two weeks at number one on the R&B charts. Here it comes back as a Mother's Day tribute from two of the best a cappella groups going.
Each man sings from his own square on a shared screen. When a man's turn comes, his square is singled out and a photo of him with his mother appears. One mom beams in a white turtleneck and dangling earrings.
SaveThe words are plain and direct. "You taught me everything," they sing, and "you're the driving force in my life." She was there "when skies were grey," and she'll always be "the girl in my life."
Then comes the chorus. "Mama, you're the queen of my heart," and a little later, "loving you is like food to my soul." With the photos coming and going as they sing, it is hard not to think of your own mother.
SaveFor a cappella fans, the pairing is a treat by itself. Straight No Chaser started at Indiana University and became famous for a funny take on "The 12 Days of Christmas," which led to a five-album deal with Atlantic Records. Home Free is a country a cappella group of five men who won NBC's "The Sing-Off" and a contract with Sony. Plenty of listeners call these their two favorite groups, and they're glad to find them singing together.
The photos get a lot of love too. People write about the pictures of the guys with their mamas, and then about their own mothers, some a phone call away and some they miss every day.
SaveThe very last words are "yes you are." After three minutes of telling Mama what she means, it's the only answer left.
