The driving lesson where texting is required
The instructor's request sounds like a trick. Drive the obstacle course, the new drivers are told, and text on your phone while you do it. more
This is a driving school in Brussels, Belgium, and the trainees are confused, even a little shocked. Texting at the wheel on a real street is illegal and can get you a fine. But the instructor insists. They must finish the "mobile phone course," and they must not hit a single obstacle on the track.
The track is a safe, closed space, but it has the same challenges as a normal street. That is the point. The lesson is meant to show new drivers how hard it really is to drive well with a phone in hand, and the test turns out to be close to impossible. The film is the work of Responsible Young Drivers, a name that says exactly what they are after.
SavePlenty of people want a course like this in every road test. One hopes there was a prize for the trainees who did not want to try it at all. And a sharp-eyed few point out that one man in the car is riding without a seat belt.
The best reaction of all comes with a perfectly straight face. One person claims to have crashed three times just trying to write it.
