Gold falls for a 12-year-old's 'Defying Gravity'
Beau Dermott is 12, and the song she names for her Britain's Got Talent audition is 'Defying Gravity' from Wicked. It's one of the hardest songs a young singer can pick. more
The answer she gets is honest. "Oh wow, it's a hard song. Okay, well, good luck." Then the music starts, and Beau opens with "Something has changed within me, something is not the same."
SaveShe sings about being through with playing by the rules of someone else's game, and about trusting her instincts. Someone watching sums it up in one line. She is "a different girl from the one we saw backstage."
SaveHalfway through, Amanda Holden is taken aback. She points to the goosebumps on her skin. Beau keeps going up, through "everyone deserves the chance to fly," and on toward the end of the song.
The last line is the one the whole song is built for. No wizard that there's or was is ever going to bring her down. Some people in the room are in tears, and so is Amanda. She turns, hits the Golden Buzzer, and a shower of gold comes down over Beau.
SaveThat gold means no waiting. Beau is going through, and this is only the first week of auditions. The whole panel looks a little stunned, and the smiles keep coming long after the final note.
SaveThe praise comes in a rush. Beau was "so, so, so amazing. Really, really, really." Then the same voice looks ahead. "It's going to be brilliant." Not bad for a girl who was told, a few minutes earlier, that she had picked a hard song.
