The Marsh family's Meat Loaf parody about prices
Ben and Danielle Marsh and their four kids have taken a Meat Loaf ballad and given it a new chorus anyone with a shopping list will know. All of the prices have gone up. more
The six of them sing from their home studio in Kent, in front of red floral curtains. Alfie, Thomas, Ella and Tess sing alongside their parents. The full title is "All of the Prices Have Gone Up (But We Can't Pay That)," and the song is about how ordinary people get by when everything costs more.
The answer to each new price comes out flat and plain. No, I can't pay that. A moment later they admit that in some ways we've got it easy, and that one line keeps the whole thing from turning into a moan.
From there the verses walk through the house and the weekly shop. The kitchen's as cold as ice. The fruit, the crisps and the potatoes all get their turn, and nobody wants to buy your stuff. They smile through most of it.
SaveDanielle carries a big share of the sound. Listeners love that she hardly seems to need a microphone and still comes through the loudest. The kids hold up their end of the harmonies for close to six minutes, which is a long time to stay in tune.
Then there's the dog, who has a habit of turning up during the family's songs. Here the dog wanders in and out as if to ask what everyone is singing about today. Plenty of fans say that walk-on is their favorite part.
None of this came from a music school. Ben has worked as a history professor and Danielle as an administrator, and neither has a music background. The kids have been learning bass guitar, drums and piano. People have called them a real-life Partridge Family, minus the bus.
Ella has said she loves the singing, the acting and being on camera, and that the nervous parts are easier with her mum and dad there to help. The prices keep going up right to the last note. The Marshes just sing over them.
