The fawn that sat down in the middle of the road

Halfway across a highway in Port Orchard, Washington, a young fawn sits down in the middle of the road. Its mother has already gone on ahead. more

Jessie Larson sees it from her car. At first she is afraid the fawn is hurt, and she thinks about getting out to help. Instead she does something quieter. She turns off her engine so she'll not scare the little one.

The traffic has scared the fawn, and it stays tucked down on the road. Then the mother, a white-tailed deer, comes back. She leans in close and nuzzles her baby. She keeps at it, coaxing and coaxing, until the fawn finds the nerve to stand.

The headline runs in white letters across the lower third. — Halfway across a highway in Port Orchard, Washington, a young fawn sits down in the middle of the road.

Getting up takes some work. The fawn's legs wobble, but it stays right beside its mother. The two set off together, straight down the middle of the road.

A little farther on, they step off the pavement and walk into the woods side by side. That is where they were headed in the first place.
