Baby deer cozies up to a logger like a cat
A logger comes upon two fawns resting on the gravel at the side of the road. The closer one takes a sudden interest in him. more
The other fawn stays a little farther down the road. This one lets him walk within a few feet, closer than any deer he has met before. He asks her what she is doing, mostly to see if she is calm or scared.
Then she stands, walks over and sniffs him. She rubs her back along his leg, just the way a cat does. He laughs and tells her he is not who she thinks he is. Up close, every white spot on her light brown coat is clear.
SaveShe perks up as the visit goes on and stands a little taller. One viewer pictured her side of the talk: born yesterday, no sense of danger, would you like to be my friend. Another decided the logger must be a Disney princess.
There's a plain reason she is out here without her mother. Mother deer often tuck their fawns somewhere and leave to feed. The babies are made to stay put and blend in until she comes back, so a fawn alone isn't always a fawn in trouble.
Still, the logger told the local ranger, who set up night vision cameras that same night to make sure the fawn had a mother. Later the cameras caught a large female deer with the very same fawn. Mom had only stepped out.
