A grizzly learns not to mess with mama moose
Two moose calves stand in a lake in Glacier National Park, their mother close beside them. On the shore, a grizzly bear has his eye on them. more
For a while, the mother holds her ground in the water. She keeps the calves near her and her eyes on the bear. He's waiting for a chance to grab one and run.
SaveThen he edges too close to one of the calves, and her patience runs out. She bursts out of the lake and charges. The grizzly turns and flees, and he is much faster than he looks. One second he is right in front of her, and a moment later he is a long way off.
SaveShe walks back to her calves, but the bear isn't done. He starts slapping at the ground, trying to scare the family. She barely reacts. She goes after him again and pushes him even farther off, and by now all three moose have climbed out of the water.
People who have met moose in the woods of Alaska and North Idaho say a cow with calves is the last animal they would want to cross, bear or no bear. One joked that next to her, the grizzly looks like a chihuahua.
Plenty of viewers only counted one calf the first time through. The second is easy to miss until late, which means she has been minding two babies and a bear the whole time.
The grizzly ends up sitting a long way off, staring at the family. The mother stares right back. If he takes one more step toward those calves, she's ready to run him off again.
