A young elephant greets her carer

They're the herd at HERD, an elephant orphanage in South Africa. As they walk, their dark shapes are mirrored in the dam while the light turns gold behind them. Timisa is in the line, and their carer Adine walks right along with them.

Having people in the line does something useful for the rest of us. As one viewer put it, with the carers walking next to them, you can actually see how big the elephants really are.

Along the way comes the hello. Khanyisa, a young female elephant, goes straight to Adine for a greeting, with the low rumbles elephants use to say hi. One fan calls Adine her human mama, and another says Khanyisa always seems to know when Adine is near.

People who love this walk write in from as far as Seattle and Canada to say it is how they start their day, and some have seen it many times without getting tired of it. The herd keeps walking toward home, each elephant doubled in the water.
