Baby deer gets the zoomies while mom rests

Most deer move through the woods as if they hope nobody notices them. This fawn in the Florida Everglades has other ideas. more

His mother has stopped to rest and is lying down in the grass. Her baby, a small white-tailed fawn, is still on his feet. He has a lot of energy, and he has decided to use it.

The mother deer rests in the grass while her fawn stays on his feet, ready to go.

Then he takes off. The fawn bounds through the tall grass so fast that he's all over the place. His mouth hangs open as he goes, which makes him look like he is grinning.

Plenty of people point to his tongue. Others look past him to his mother, who stays down in the grass while her child tears around. One person pictured him calling out for her to look how fast he is.

Anyone with a cat knows this move. It's the zoomies, known more formally as Frenetic Random Activity Periods, or FRAPs. They come on when an animal has built up more energy than it can hold, and running is the quickest way to spend it.

At one point the fawn comes up close to the trail camera, stops among the green trees and looks right at it. Bobby Wummer Photography caught the whole show with an AlphCam.

None of it is how deer usually act. Most are careful and quiet. They run from loud noises or freeze in a car's headlights. This one looks like somebody handed him his first cup of coffee.
