An elephant pulls Lek in close for a lullaby
Faa Mai is a huge Asian elephant, and Lek Chailert is tiny beside her. Lek has a lullaby, though, and it can turn a giant to putty. more
Lek founded Elephant Nature Park, the sanctuary where Faa Mai lives, and she cares for the elephants there. Faa Mai's name means “A New Day,” and she's a gentle one.
Lek sits down by the fence, and right away Faa Mai reaches out with her trunk, wraps it around her and pulls her in. It's the part people love most, and many of them call it a hug.
SaveLek sings to her, and as she goes, she fans the elephant with a piece of fabric. Viewers who know the tune say it is “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” sung in Thai.
SaveFaa Mai goes soft. Her ears begin to flap, and plenty of viewers swear they flap in time with the song. That trunk curls up too.
SaveNear the end, Faa Mai gives her ears another flap. Those who watch closely say she smiles.
Lek can sing elephants right to sleep, and Faa Mai seems to give in faster than most. She's not the only one. More than a few people listening admit the lullaby made them sleepy too.
