When a baby elephant meets her first rain

Rain comes to the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, and Wan Mai has never felt it before. more

The baby Asian elephant lives at the park with her family, and this is her first monsoon. Soon her skin and long trunk are soaked, and she's giddy with it.

The park has big wooden shelters shaped like umbrellas, but the family doesn't stay under one for long. Wan Mai rushes out through the grass, finds a puddle and goes at it with her trunk and feet, kicking and slapping the water.

A spray of water flies from a trunk as the family plays in the wet grass.

Then she finds the mud. She dives straight in and rolls, and her trunk and tail come up brown. The older elephants join her, and they seem to enjoy her curiosity almost as much as she enjoys the mud.

The best part is the sound. Wan Mai squeaks as she plays, small, happy squeaks that are hard to hear without grinning. The grown-ups get a little silly too, and her mom looks like she is having nearly as much fun as her baby.

The game keeps going. Wan Mai weaves between the big legs around her and rubs herself against her family, while some water buffalo watch from nearby and stay out of it.

Even when the rain thins to a drizzle, she keeps rolling around in the wet grass. The monsoon has only just started, and she already has it figured out.
