Rescue kitten Oreo wakes up free of his bad eye
Oreo is about ten weeks old, and one look tells you what is wrong. One of his eyes is in terrible shape, and Dr Matt at Vet Ranch has a plan for it. more
The kitten was found living wild two weeks earlier, and he wasn't easy to hold. Even then the eye was swollen and scabbed. Now he's on the exam table, and Dr Matt passes on the story he was told.
SaveThe person who found him took him to a vet and came away with medicine for the eye. It got better for a while, then stopped getting better. Now the eye has ruptured. It'll never heal, and Oreo will never see out of it.
So the best thing, Dr Matt says, is to take out the source of the pain and infection. He'll remove the eye today and stitch the spot closed. That way Oreo can be a healthy, happy kitten and live the rest of his life with no pain from it.
SaveOreo goes under a surgical drape with only the bad eye showing. Dr Matt shows it one more time. This eye is never going to work again, he says, so out it comes.
SaveThen the surgery is done. Where the eye was, there are stitches now, and it is time to wake him up.
Oreo sleeps it off in a kennel lined with blankets, a pink stuffed toy beside him. A day later he is eating well. The spot is a little swollen, which is to be expected, and Dr Matt says he is doing pretty good.
SaveAbout ten days on, the eye area looks really good. There's no drainage, just a tiny scab, and the stitches will dissolve on their own. He's ready to go. Plenty of people noticed how much he grew in those ten days, too.
A foster home is already lined up. With his personality, Dr Matt says, he shouldn't take long to get adopted at all. With that side closed for good, Oreo now looks like he is winking at everyone he meets. It suits him.
