Pet otters, a giant box and dad hiding inside

Kotaro and Hana were busy with their meal when a strange noise started. They went to look, and a giant cardboard box came after them. Both pet otters went straight under the couch. more

They stayed there a while, two faces side by side under the couch, watching to see whether the box would follow. It did not. It sat in the middle of the living room being enormous, and before long curiosity won, as it tends to with these two.

Kotaro and Hana's first move is straight under the couch, where they keep an eye on the box.

The box turned out to be a present, and the present was for them. Inside was a little sofa just their size. Their dad, who shares the pair's days on the KOTSUMET channel from their home in Japan, took their cage away and set the little sofa in its place, then waited to find out whether they would sleep on it or under it.

The next morning the otters came downstairs to find the giant box still in the living room. It had also moved, which spooked them both. Up close they found three holes in one side and the lid sitting open, and Kotaro could tell something was inside. He went to work the way he always does, up on his hind legs with his front paws against the cardboard, stretching to get his nose over the edge, then dropping down to give the whole thing a shove and see if anything moved inside.

Hana was having none of it. She watched from across the room, close enough to see and far enough to run. That's how they split the work when something strange turns up. Kotaro inspects, and Hana waits for the report.

Even so, the holes were hard to resist. Once, Hana came close enough to put her face and paws right into one of them. Then she went back to keeping her distance.

Hana finally comes close enough to put her face to one of the holes.

Kotaro, meanwhile, had found the clue that settled it. A finger was poking out of one of the holes. Boxes don't have fingers. Dads do, and theirs had been sitting inside a cardboard box in his own living room, waiting for two otters to figure it out.

When he finally popped up out of the box, Kotaro jumped. The fright lasted about as long as it took to recognize him. Then it was over, and there was an otter stretched out across his lap as if that had been the plan all along.

The little sofa stayed where the cage used to be. Their dad, for his part, had started his day folded inside a cardboard box so his otters would have something to investigate, and by the look of the lap, nobody minded.
