Kira has a newborn kitten and a firm opinion about where that kitten should sleep. The kitten is about to get a ride. more

Kira carries her newborn the way mother cats do, in her mouth. At one point the two of them are inside a green play tunnel printed with butterflies, the tiny kitten held gently in her mother's teeth.

Kira keeps a gentle hold on her newborn inside a green play tunnel.

Her goal is the bed. Kira carries her across the floor, past a turquoise litter box and a yellow mat with a black cat printed on it. The kitten squeaks, but those teeth never hurt her.

At the bed she sets the kitten down gently, then lies down beside her, and the kitten crawls in close. Kira's eyes are squinty and her face is smushy to begin with. Once the kitten is settled, her eyes go half shut, and she looks very pleased with herself.

The father cat is right there too, keeping watch over his little family. Kira, soft and fluffy, could pass for a kitten herself.

Then the family settles in together. One of the grown cats curls up into a tight ball and sleeps. The big move is over.

Plenty of people who have lived with a mother cat know this move. They tell of waking up to a bed full of kittens, or of a mother who kept moving her babies to the best pillow until she got her way. One person's cat heard the kitten squeak and jumped up to look for the crying baby. Kira, meanwhile, has hers exactly where she wants her.
