Baby otters squeal when their keeper shows up
A row of baby otters is waiting at a fence, and the person they are waiting for hasn't even shown up yet. more
They're waiting for their favorite zookeeper, and they're not patient about it. The pups climb the fence, push their noses through it and grab at it with their odd little hands. They jump around and squeak the whole time.
That sound is the star here. It's high and squeezy, and almost everyone who hears it lands on the same thought. These otters sound exactly like squeaky dog toys.
SaveThe pups live at the New Forest Wildlife Park in Ashurst, England. The park is home to badgers, wolves, deer, owls, wildcats and even bison, but its best-known work may be with otters. It rescues injured and orphaned otters and helps them recover.
Otters are built for this kind of fuss. They have webbed feet for swimming and clever hands for grabbing, and they have been seen playing with pebbles just for fun. One description calls them ferrets that act like seals, which fits this bunch on the fence.
Then the keeper walks into view. The squeaks turn into squeals, and the whole row goes off at once, a fence full of very small, very loud fans.
