A rescued sloth and the beagle who won him over
Chuwie the sloth reached the animal hospital terrified, his hand badly burned by a power line. His best friend would turn out to be a beagle named Seven. more
Juan Carlos rescued him in Venezuela, and he was taken straight in. The vet treated his wounds and said he would recover in time. But the burns had taken all the claws on his hind legs and his left hand, and without them Chuwie could never be released.
Haydee took on his care. She kept his burns clean while he rested, and soon he got his strength back. Little by little he felt well enough to let the people looking after him come closer.
That was Seven's cue. The beagle began to follow Chuwie around, staying calm so he would feel safe with her. She looked for things they had in common, so when the sloth ate a plant, Seven gave the plant a try too. She even tried to show him the fun of playing with toys.
SaveHer patience paid off. The sloth and the beagle became best friends, and Chuwie grew more relaxed and happier with Seven at his side. He strokes her with his hand while she licks his fingers, and he wraps an arm around her to pull her close.
SaveThe two now share a home indoors, and they're hard to pull apart. Whenever Seven heads out for a walk, Chuwie snuggles up to her and makes a big show of it, as if they might never meet again.
Haydee calls the two of them together the cutest thing she has ever seen. Plenty of people agree, and many add the same surprise: they never knew a sloth could smile. Near the end, with his arm around Seven, Chuwie looks a lot like he is doing exactly that.
