Fifteen drill dancers and not one missed beat
Fifteen women in shiny green costumes and feathered headpieces take the floor at the Australian DrillDance Championships. The music starts, and they march forward together. more
DrillDance is a team sport built on music and movement. In the exhibition part of a contest, a team takes a traditional marching routine and adds its own creative flair.
This is the senior exhibition team from Enigma, a DrillDance club in Adelaide. Their routine mixes set moves, known as compulsories, with tricky formations. Each one only works if every dancer lands in the right spot on the right count.
SaveThe shapes run from simple straight lines to big geometric patterns. They move in unison and don't miss a beat, so it's hard to pick out any one dancer.
SaveThey keep the energy up the whole way through. One formation flows into the next, every move neat and smooth, and nobody looks rushed.
SaveThrough all of it, they keep smiling. With fifteen people counting the same beats, that might be the hardest trick in the routine.
