A "Hairspray" dance wins the Golden Buzzer

One of the dancers tells the Britain's Got Talent judges who they are. Born to Perform is a group of people with disabilities, and they're here to show what they can do. more

The audience cheers, and "You Can't Stop the Beat" from the musical Hairspray kicks in. The group is dressed for the fifties, in white shirts, bright skirts and matching scarves tied at the neck. The men wear suspenders and bow ties.

A few lines into the song, the audience is on its feet and clapping along. The judges are smiling ear to ear. Then comes a solo break, and a few of the dancers step forward one at a time to take the spotlight with moves of their own.

The finish is a flurry of somersaults, flips and splits, then one last pose. The judges get up and join the applause. On stage, the dancers hug each other, all smiles, and many of them are crying. One mother of a child on the spectrum spells out what a feat this is: the coordination, the sensory sensitivities, a huge social situation, all at once.

David Walliams asks how it feels. One dancer sums it up in a single word, amazing. Simon Cowell says he didn't like it, then corrects himself. He loved it. He loved that they were having such a great time, and he calls it one of his favorite auditions.

Walliams says he loved it so much that he's going to do something about it. He stands up and hits the Golden Buzzer. Longtime fans of the show say this is exactly the kind of act he saves it for.
