"Somebody That I Used To Know," in perfect sync
A young man in a white shirt, sleeves rolled up, stands in a wood-floored hall full of people in their best clothes. Nobody here will stand still for long. more
They are the dancers of CDK Company, and the song is "Somebody That I Used To Know." Not long after the first verse starts, a dancer in sunglasses stands with both arms bent while the others bend down low nearby.
SaveFrom there it is contemporary dance with a few curveballs. The group mixes styles, and the moves are playful but precise. The footwork is crisp, and the hardest moves look easy.
The real trick is the timing. A whole room of dancers moves as one, then splits into shapes and patterns that keep changing. One viewer compared it to a kaleidoscope, which is about right.
SaveEven the clothes and hair seem to be in on it, swinging with each turn instead of getting in the way. All that dressing up makes it funnier when the whole room starts to whip around.
The camera moves with them, slipping in close and finding angles that put you in the middle of the room. When the chorus arrives, "Now you're just somebody that I used to know," the group comes together on the wooden floor, and nobody pulls focus.
SaveNear the end, the whole group leans forward as one, arms stretched out, and holds the pose. It looks easy, which is the hardest look of all.
SaveSome of its biggest fans are old enough to have seen a lot of dancing. A former ballroom and Latin dancer, 68, called it the most creative choreography in years. A 62-year-old said those older bones ached just watching, and plenty of others keep coming back to see it again.
