An "Uptown Funk" parody in Navy whites

"These whites, these hot whites, are looking nice for the Admiral Vice." That's how the Naval Academy's midshipmen open their take on "Uptown Funk," and it only gets cockier from there. more

The song is "Naptown Funk," and Naptown is Annapolis, the harbor town that is home to the United States Naval Academy. Midshipman 1st Class Rylan Tuohy put it together. At least 60 people took over a whole block of downtown with one camera and a drone, and they were done in four hours.

The lyrics are full of jabs at the other service academies. "We're not Cadets, we're Midshipmen," they sing. They boast they could "make a Zoomie want to come transfer," Zoomie being a cadet at the Air Force Academy, and West Point is left "stranded in no man's land."

Meanwhile the mids are all over town, just as the chorus says, strolling downtown and chilling on the dock. They dance down the street in their whites, hats and sunglasses, looking very pleased with themselves.

Then everything stops. "Wait a minute. Fill my cup, put some coffee in it." A sip, work is done, and then comes an order: "Margo, get the duty van!"

Back on the beat, the bragging picks up. "I got that high and tight," they sing, and then they make a promise: "We're beating Army tonight."

Near the end they call out the other Navy towns one at a time. "San Diego, jump on it." Norfolk is told it's a Navy town, "so show it," and Chicago is ordered to quit hiding.

Over the last chorus, a brass band slips in "Anchors Aweigh." Old Navy hands love it. A retired Navy chief sends a salute, and a former midshipman's mom says it still makes her dance in her seat.
